SIM swap attacks: how to protect your phone number: Velxen blog cover with a shield with a padlock in amber on a dark background

In a SIM swap, a criminal convinces a mobile network to move your phone number to a SIM card they control. Your phone loses signal, and every SMS, including login codes, goes to them.

Why it matters for crypto

If your accounts use SMS codes for sign-in or password resets, a SIM swap can let an attacker reset your passwords and take over your email and exchange accounts.

Warning signs

  • Your phone suddenly shows "No service" or "Emergency calls only" in an area with good coverage.
  • You get messages about a SIM change you did not request.
  • You are logged out of accounts unexpectedly.

How to protect yourself

  • Use an authenticator app, not SMS, for 2FA wherever possible. Velxen uses authenticator apps.
  • Ask your mobile network to add a PIN or extra checks before SIM changes.
  • Keep your phone number off public social media profiles.
  • Give your email account a strong password and app-based 2FA.

If it happens

Contact your mobile network immediately from another phone, change your email password, and contact Velxen so we can protect your account while you recover your number.
