Two-factor authentication: why every crypto account needs it: Velxen blog cover with a shield with a padlock in amber on a dark background

A password alone is not enough to protect money. Passwords leak in data breaches, get reused across websites and get phished. Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second lock that a thief cannot copy from a leaked password list.

How an authenticator app works

An authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy) shows a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. The code is created on your phone from a secret shared once, when you scan a QR code. To sign in, you need your password and the current code from your phone.

Turning on 2FA on Velxen

  1. Open your profile and go to Security.
  2. Choose two-factor authentication and scan the QR code with your authenticator app.
  3. Type the six-digit code to confirm.
  4. Write down your backup codes and keep them offline, somewhere safe.

From then on, Velxen asks for a code when you sign in and before withdrawals.

Golden rules

  • Never share a 2FA code with anyone, including people who say they are support staff.
  • Never store backup codes in your email or in a photo on your phone.
  • If you change phones, move your authenticator first, before you reset the old phone.
